Relection Journal

For the Project #4, my idea was to have a collection of things that represents what makes up a grocery store such as fruits, other foods, and non-foods such as shopping carts and paper bags. Making this type of an exhibition was a very interesting and creative experience. It allowed me to do extensive research on art pieces by different artists. The art exhibit project I created ties with the work of the course because they both represent the discussion of the elements of art.

A Video Review

1. The key concepts that I have learned from watching these films are (1) "The Lowdown or Lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art"; the key concepts are esoteric art which is a movement from Finland in which art is expressed though the artist's individuality. The key concept in the film "Displaying modern Art: The Tate Approach" is abstractions which is a depiction of things that represent the earth. In "Bones of Contention: Native American Archaeology" is anthropology which is the study of culture and things that represent a specific region on earth. Lastly, the key concept for "George Eastman House: Perfect Picture" is Daguerreotype which is a type of machine that makes the process of photographs.

2. The films do relate to the Art Exhibition Project because in the film, it shows and explains the history of the art museums and exhibitions and their themes. Just like the film, our project is to view an art exhibition and to give a detailed background of the exhibit as well as the place where it's being held.

3. Watching the films was very informative and gave me ideas of how to present my curation project. They do add depth to the art concepts in preparation for my project. Also, the film has brought ideas for me to be more detailed about specific art works.

Time for a Video Review

1. The four films that I have chosen to watch was; (1) "Andy Warhol:Images of an Image" because not only am I an admirer of Andy Warhol's work, but definitely changed the way modern art is created by incorporating pop culture in modern art. (3)"Hockney on Photography" because of his pop art work that show a collage of cubical pieces together to form a figure. Lastly (4)"The power of Art: Rothko" because of the expression shown in his abstract paintings that is similar to cubism.

2. In "Andy Warhol:Images of an Image", the key concept in the film was silkscreen which is a form of printmaking in which the screen is made from silk. In "Art of Henry Moore" the key concept in the film was reclining which means to lean or to have the back of an object tilt down, in this case, Moore's sculptures reclined. In "Hockney on Photography", the key concept in this film was collage which means to form objects together to create an art piece. Lastly, in "The power of Art: Rothko", the key concept in this film was expressionism which is to create art solely on the artist's emotions and feelings.

3. The videos relate to the readings of this course by explaining the history behind the movement of modern art and how it has evolved of centuries.

4. The films were very interesting. It is very fascinating to not only watch each individual artist's work and how it came about, but to also learn about their lives and how it has affected their creation for art. The films add depth to the readings of this course by bringing a more personal look inside the lifestyle of the artist.

And Now a Video Review

1. The four films that choose to watch was (1) "Dada and Surrealism" because of the interseting movement this form of art has brought to a society of traditional art. (2) "The Impact of Cubism" because of the focus on shape in art and how it has impacted the things are made today. (3) "The Mystical North: Spanish Art from the 19th Century to the Present" because of it's uniqure art that brings a message of the times. Lastly, (4) "Expressionism" which focus on the color and the way it is use to express a portrait.

2. In "Dada and Surrealism", the key concepts are collage which uses different martrials and put them together to make art, also assemblage which deals with a three dimensional art form. In "The Impact of Cubism", the key concept is spiral form, which a style or shape used in art; also juxtapositions which is two objects that are side by side. Lastly, "Expressionism" the key concept is lithography which incoorapte stone for printing.

3. The videos relate to the textbook readings in which they incooperate the origin of where these art movements came from. They both also discuss on the individual artist who conrtribute to the art movement of their time.

4. While watching these films, it is very interesting viewing how these forms of art and the movement they started in the 19th and 20th century has impacted modern art. The films give depth to the readings by bringing more information to the artist's life, work , and contributions to society.

The Art of the mask

1. The three inspirational photos I have chosen are masks from ancient times. I have chosen these three masks because each one is unique and represents the culture of each region they come from.

2. The first mask I have chosen is the Coyolxauhqui Mask made out of stone. This art piece comes from the Aztec tribe in Mexico. It is carved to have a unique and 3-D shape of the nose and eyes and the lines of the face. The second picture is the example of a tribal mask that used in parts of Africa and the Americas. This mask is often used to ward off evil spirits or used for celebrations. The last art piece is the Ancient Egyptian masked used to emulate the Pharaohs and higher authorities of this time.

3. The elements that I used for my mask are basically focusing on the facial structures and color, I used these colors on the mask's head because I was inspired by reggae music so I used the colors that represent reggae music.

4. Creating this mask was a unique experience for me. It was getting a chance to tap into my creativity and to use inspirations into the mask.

Time for another Video Review

1. The four videos I have selected is (1)"African Art" because it shows such a great diversity of art through rituals, spiritualism, and culture. The second video is "Buddhism" because of how art and the religion connects together in a aesthetic view of tranquility. The third video I choose is "Islamic Art" because of how the art tells a history or story of a Muslim faith. Lastly, the final video I have chosen is "Chinese Art: Treasures of the National Palace Museum" because of the rich history of the country's pottery making.

2. For each key concept: In "African Art", the key concept in this movie is carving, which was form of art that has symbolism to it. In "Buddhism"the key concept is tanha which is form of Buddhist teaching. In "Islamic Art" the key concept it mosque, which is a place of worship for Muslims. The key concept for "Chinese Art: Treasures of the National Palace Museum" is curio which is made of metal or the form of wood.

3. The videos relate to the readings in the textbook by discussing the meaning and symbolism of how the art of Africa and Asia correlates to the culture of the people. The only difference is that in the film is it tends to focus on one individual's artwork.

4. The films are very interesting and also it shows how much the people that represent each country have a love for their beliefs and upbringing that they express it in a form of art. They also add depth to the readings because they give more of a story about the artist.

My two hands

1. Using my hands for this project was a little difficult at first because I really wanted to capture the hand from real life into the picture, but as I was went on, what I really was more concerned was drawing the things that capture what makes my hands the way they are such as the lines and the form.

2. I select the pencil instead of the charcoal because my hands are of a lighter complextion and since the pencil is a lighter color than the charcoal, the color of the pencil fits the complection of my hand.

3. It was a challenging task drawing with my non-dominant hand because I shook alot so the drawing had some squiggles to it, but with shading the artwork went well.

4. With the first drawing, I had just sketched what my drawing of my hand needed to make it realistic like the lines on my hands and the form. For the final result, the artwork was more smoother.

5. I would use my non-dominant hand again in the future, but not for sketching, but shading in parts of the work.

Time for Another Video Review

1. The four videos I choose to watch was (1) The drawings of Michelangelo because he was one of the most famous painter and sculptor who brought realism in his art works to the Renaissance Period. The next video was (2) Leonardo Di Vinci: The Mind of the Renaissance because he was not only the greatest artist of all time, but introduced new techniques of art into the Renaissance. Third video is El Greco: Rediscovering a Master because he brought style and technique to his artwork during the Spanish Renaissance. The last video I choose was The Power of Art: Caravaggio because his portraits of human seem to show so much emotion in the paintings of the characters.

2. The key concept in "The drawings of Michelangelo" were the anatomy which is the structure of the body which Michelangelo focused on during sculpturing. In "Leonardo Di Vinci: The Mind of the Renaissance" a key concept is
aeronautics and anatomist. In "El Greco: Rediscovering a Master", the key concept is primitivism, a form of western art. Lastly, in The Power of Art: Caravaggio, the key concept was realism.

3. How the films relate to the textbook readings is that they both show examples of art pieces of these artist. Although both to talk about the artist individually, the video gets more in depth about the life and work of Di Vinci and Michelangelo.

4. I thought the films were very interesting in explaining the work of these great artists who contributed to the Renaissance period and brought realism in their works. They ad depth to the reading by providing visual to the learning material.

Another Video Review

1. The three videos that I choose to watch was 1) Beyond the Classical: Byzantine and Later Greek art because it was very interesting to see how the Byzantine Empire separated from the Catholic church to form the Orthodox religion and how they're art was unique from the Roman Empire. 2) Greek Awakening: Art from the 5th century because it is interesting to see how Greece contributed to the early Eastern Civilization. Lastly the film, The Measure of All things: Greek Art and the Human Figure was very interesting because it gives an interesting look back at how buildings were constructed with designs of human sculptures.

2. In the film, More Human than Human, the key concept I have learned was realism of the human body and how it was embraced in Greek art. In Beyond the Classical: Byzantine and Later Greek art the key concept was religious paintings which showed art of scenes that were taken from the bible. In Greek Awakening: Art from the 5th century, the key concept was pediment which was triangular form that was usually created in front of a building that is supported by columns. Lastly for The Measure of All things: Greek Art and the Human Figure, the key concept was Cycladic sculptures.

3. The videos definitely related to the course teachings of the text book because both explain the Orthodox art of the Byzantine Empire and how it is different from the religious art of the Roman Empire. Also both views discussed the architectural work of Greek art such a human sculptures and the construction of buildings.

4. All four of the films that were viewed were very interesting to watch. They really make one think about how art can have an importance in society. They add depth to the readings by giving visuals on how the art of Greece and Rome came to past.

Time for a Video Review

1. For each video, there is a key concept. In "Prairie Style" the key concept is the floating horizontal plane which consists of a architectural work that represents water. Also, in "Architecture: The Science of Design", the skyscrapers represents a tall vertical structure that imposes on the skyline. Lastly in the film, "Classical Architecture" column as a type of structure that is vertical and are usually used in places such as cathedrals, government buildings, and other architectural works.

2. The films do take a similarity to the teachings in the textbook. In one of the videos, "Classical Architecture", it views the same information as chapter 13 in the "Living with Art" textbook; given on how the Romans and the Greeks introduced new architectural concepts and through their influence many countries, even today in the United States and Europe, use the same forms as they did during the Ancient and Roman times.

3. Viewing the films, I have learned many architectural concepts and also how with the other forms of art, architecture is a type of art in my opinion that take more concentration, time, and material. They add depth in understanding Architecture by how the buildings were made by the different types of materials and the meaning that was put into building these structures.

4. For my film of choice, I choose Frank Gehry: Architecture as Art because I was very fascinated with the different works on residential living, especially the structure on Japanese residential homes.

Shopping Addiction

Installation Art is a form of creative art that is three dimensional. It gives the obsever the chance to be apart of the this form and also be able to interact with the art.

All types of things and objects are used in installation art once it is a three deminstional shape.

An artist chooses to make installation art to allow the obsever to be one with the art work. To be able to view it as an art form that is real instead of a drawing that is an illusion, art installation to the observer is viewing real life.

For my project, the most piece of art I felt a connection with was the clothes piled on top of the container because usually when I go shopping, I buy so many clothes I really have no place to put it, since my closet is filled.

The theme for this project represents self because I am one who loves to shop for clothes and I think it shows inside my room through all the clothes piled one on top the other.

The materials that were used were clothes and also hangers.

The location for my project was located in my bedroom because this is where all the clothes that I went to buy are located and also this is where one can see that I shop alot.

Overall, for this project, Shop addiction, I wanted to show viewers how one loves to shop; that the clothes sort of takeover the bedroom and how when one shops, there is no more closet space so the only space is hanging on the door, the walls, and piling on top of other objects. This form of art focuses on color because I want the viewer to see the main object I was trying to get, which were the clothes Also in planning this I wanted to show how one can create installation art using everyday things.

Video Review

1. For each video, the key concept was plaster, which is a mixture of paste and water and is used when making ceramics and sculpting and for awhile the plaster dries to give the artwork a cement feel. Another key concept is glass blowing which is a technique when using glass for art, it involves enlarging the glass as a balloon by a blow tube.

2. The three videos do compare to the course readings in which they use the same key concepts and instruction on creating sculpting, glass, and ceramics, but the video does give more of a visual example and examples of the artists works than in the readings.

3. My opinion on the films was that all three are very interesting and informative. Learning about the in depth of installation, sculpture, and craft makes one take for granted what does go into everyday things, such as buildings and things that are accessible that make up a society.

My Experience in Other Blogs

1. Project #1. http://artinkimslife.blogspot.com/2011/02/gallery-visit.html
Project #2. http://artinquiries.blogspot.com/2011/02/albright-knox.html?showComment=1299293503775#c4983093872146831334

2. When viewing Project #1: there was a variety of different types of art such as oil paintings, works done on lithgraph, sculptures, and other painting portraits. Each art piece has an elementor pricnciple disscussed in theis course. For example, the portrait of Marylin Monoroe represents color and the work of "standing mother and child" represents form.

3. In Project #2, there were actually some similarities to my project work. For example, in my classmate's picture of the art work of "Urban Landscape Buffalo" by Zhan Wang, there is a similar concept to the pictures I have taken on an artist who creates the way land and places are form. Although both have the concept of land and the way it is form, both works are created differently.

4. The artwork that got my interest was on project #2. In the work entitled "Baby Girl", the way the form of the baby is made, by being ten times bigger than the adult or the mother I assume, and being made out of wood, It's makes me wonder if the artist's was bringing a message across that a child grows by the minute or that even though children are small, they are a huge responsibility.

5. I think the proess of reading my classmates projects were very insightful. It's good learn something new and read about what the artist was trying to get across instead of just judging an art at first glance.

6. The comments that my peers gave about my project was helpful. I was good to get feedback on the art and how most connected with the art work made up of zippers.

A Visit to the DUMBO Art Gallery

2) This another piece by Elisabeth Munro Smith entitled "Storm on the Prarie" (2010. This art piece is made of Basswood, bittersweet, cedar, gessoboard, and acrylic paint with a size of 36"x43"x5". This is another interpretation of place and land in which one can view forms of land through lines and shape.

3) This another Elisabeth Munro Smith art work entitled,"Very Yellow"(2010). This piece is made out of Basswood, bittersweet, paper, masonite, acrylic paint. Just like the other two works shown above, this is inspired by lands and places.

4) This is another artwork from Elisabeth Munro Smith entitled, "Deep Red and Burnt Orange" (2010). This piece is made from Basswood, crabapple, bittersweet, paper, gessoboard, and acrylic with the size of 18" x 24" x 5".

5) This artwork is created by Megan Biddle entitled "Warlord" (2009). It made of brown glass, magic sculpt, and mixed media and it's size is 8"x7x6". This artwork is one that I would like to know about because I am interested in knowing what inspired her to this piece and to form the materials that make this piece.

6) This artwork by Beatrice Wolert is entitled, "Repositioned" (2011). It is a collection of zippers placed on the board and this is also has inspired me because it is so astonishing to how an artist can use many zippers to create such a great artwork and how these zippers can attract one's eye through the color.

7) This artwork is another creation by Megan Biddle entitled "Untitled" (2010). This piece is made out of charcoal and ink with a size of 22"x30".

8) This is another artwork created by Beatrice Wolert entitled "Repositioned #9" (2011) (excuse my mother near the art piece). This work is also made from different colors of cloth and zippers. The size of this artwork is "9'11 x 9'6". I feel a connection with this painting because of the effort that was put in placing the amount of zippers to this board. I also feel a connection to how the line patterns symbolize a wave of colors combining together.

1) This art work, called "From Here to There" (2010), was created by Elisabeth Munro Smith. This art piece is made from basswood, bitterweet, cedar, Masonite, and acrylic paint. It's size is 29"x69"x11". The artist was inspired by place and land so interprets the patterns and designs in her work. Overall she uses this art piece to show an example of what one sees when viewing forms of land and what these lines and shapes mean to one.

9) This piece is taken by Meghan McInnis which is entitled "Elks Lodge" (2008). This is photo taken by a Digital C-Print. The size of the photo is 40" x 25. This scene is where punk shows are performed and was shot by the artist. She wanted the viewer to see how the culture of Punk music and art are connected.

Karen and Company

1. Working on this logo was a creative experience. The process of creating a logo also involved a lot of thinking on what the concept should be and how the logo was going to symbolize the concept I was trying to establish.

2. The idea to create this logo came from a goal that I use to dream about, meaning that I have always wanted to start my own production company or an organization. For that, I wanted the name of my company to be called "Karen and Company". The art of the logo I've created; the stick figure people represented people who are involved in the company in one way or the other or it represents the masses who support me. The little stick figure holding the balloon with the initials "K & C" which stands for Karen and company, represents the people, the consumer, who supports my brand. Also, I wanted to use different colors for each stick figure to represent diversity. Overall, this logo shows how shape and lines are correlated.

3. The most important discovery I made in creating this logo was that it takes alot of time and thinking to come up with a final plan for the logo. When one sketches a first draft , they might think this is it, but a new idea pops up in one's head and the idea is changed and sketches a new drawing. This can happened so many times until one is satisfied with the final piece.

4. The most important thing I have learned from the resources on creating logos is that it is not an easy task. The graphic artists who are involved in creating these logos always have different ideas or other people may have different ideas about what to do because at the end, the logo is the one that can make something successful in selling or promoting the company or product.

The Color Theory

Creating the Value Scale and Color wheel was a learning experience. Especially creating the Color Wheel; It's so fascinating working with different colors that it reminds me of how these primary and secondary colors are the main sources when creating an image of something. Also, while working on the value scale, I have discovered that an artist use many of scale values in the there sketches especially when creating an image of a shadow; how the object is black and the shadow of the object is white. The most important information I have learned from the video is how the six main colors of creating a Color wheel are the six colors that expands into a variety of pigments. Overall, my opinion of the videos were that they are very informative and also can help one to know about the concept of Value Scale and Color Theory.

Avenue J and the Adventures of Babysitting

Avenue J and the Adventures of Babysitting

My picture slideshow on the different elements and principles shown in the photos was inspired by my daily traveling to babysit for my little cousins in the morning. The photos show the town of Avenue J, a section located in Brooklyn. The outdoor photos show my walk to work as the sun starts to come up and on my way to work, I view the everyday things such as the parking meter, trees, and other houses. The inside location are pictures of the apartment building such as the window, the structure of the building, as well as objects that represents children. Doing this project was very enjoyable. It made me be creative in taking pictures.

Emotions in Color

1. Color has the ability to express the emotion of art. Color also attracts the eye and is apart of the various elements in art. It's effect on emotions plays a great part in the works of art such as; dark pigments of grey or black can represent a feeling of sadness or evil, it can also represent something that is unattractive to one's eye. On the other hand, pigments of bright or loud colors such as green or yellow represent a feeling of luck, joy, or happiness. Bright colors also represents a form of beauty to one's eye.

2. What fascinates me about color is how it is used in shape or form. Also, it is fascinating how a small object represented in the form of a painting can bring life to a picture based on a certain color.

3. In viewing the video on color, the biggest impact was how different textures can attract one's eye. Besides the darkness and brightness of colors, texture has a way of attracting one's emotions of being amazed or excited when viewing art.

4. The biggest impact for me after view the film on feelings through color is that color can inspire us to change our way of thinking and way of life. It inspires us to take the time to appreciate the world around us.

The Beauty of Aesthetics

In the film Aesthetics: The Philosophy of Art, two key concepts where shown. First, although Aesthetics is the study of beauty and art and art can be seen as in correlation as a form of beauty, art and beauty are two terms that are different from each other. Secondly, a work of art that portrays a theme of tragedy, such as the work of Picasso, can also be looked as a beautiful painting. Another film, CARTA: Neurobiology Neurology, and Art and Aesthetics also gives a couple of key concepts. First, according to the scientist Changeux, there is a genetic envelope to the origin of art and aesthetics in the human lineage. Secondly, Changeux also mentions the discovery of parts of the brain and it's correlation with art and aesthetics.

David Hume, the 18th century modern philosopher, brings the most important theory in Aesthetics. He takes on the argument of taste, in which an object or a thing is perceived to be satisfied by a person or is perceived to have a certain standard of beauty. In taste, Hume explains that there is no need for a debate as to what has taste or not. Each individual has it's own taste of beauty. Therefore no one is to make a critique of one's aesthetic view.

Changeux and Ramachandran's scientific view of art and aesthetics takes on valid points on the style, shape, and form of each part of the brain. Although the brain is represented by aesthetics, the majority of the scientists' views were concerned on the art of the brain and not the beauty of it.

Throughout the textbook and the film, I seemed to find similarities between Chapter two of the textbook, Living with Art and the film Aesthetics: Philosophy of the Arts. Both gave similar views on the definition of Aesthetics and also both introduced the same Philosophers and their intake on Art and Aesthetics.

Overall, both films gave me a new look on art as it is perceived to be. Not only observing art as just a form of beauty or the view of art as a sense of pleasure to one's eye, but how the shape or form of an object symbolizes the function of something such as the brain.

Greetings AED200

Welcome to my very first post. Setting up this blog and my gmail was not a difficult experience. It was actually simple with help from the steps. On taking AED200, I for one love taking online courses because it bring alot of creativity to a student and more in depth opinions from just writing. What I hope to get from this class and from the blog is to get more in deep discussion into various art forms. I look forward to getting feedback on the different topics I will discuss.
